SNS Nano Fiber Technology was founded in January
2007. It originated as a result of a cooperative effort
between the University of Akron and Schill & Seilacher,
a German family owned chemical company with a history of
innovative research. Schill & Seilacher also owns
Struktol Company of America, a global company producing additives
for the rubber, plastic, and wood composite industries. Struktol
Company of America is located just north of Akron, in Stow,
Ohio.
Schill & Seilacher came upon an interesting
project during one of their technology scouting visits to
the Polymer Science Institute at the University of Akron. Scientists
at the University of Akron had developed a very unique material
using the electrospinning process. They succeeded
in incorporating large particles into the nanofiber matrix,
which had not been accomplished before. A variety of additives
were used, but the material containing superabsorbent particles
in particular showed much promise for a variety of applications;
thus it was the first to be further optimized for eventual
commercialization.
The main goal of SNS originally was to scale up
the process of electrospinning in such a way that large
particles could be added directly to the spinning solution,
in order to achieve optimal dispersion. Once this
goal was achieved, further development and optimization
of the process was necessary.
In late 2009, in response to a rapidly growing
interest in its nanofiber products, SNS decided to further
scale-up in order to meet the demands of its international
and domestic customers. It was determined that a continuous
production line was necessary in order to provide a more
efficient process and a higher capacity. This scale-up
required a larger facility, which led SNS to its new home
in Hudson, Ohio.
