SNS NANO FIBER TECHNOLOGY PRODUCES SPECIALIZED
NANOFIBER MATRICES
THROUGH JOINT PARTNERSHIP
Uniontown, OH: SNS Nano Fiber Technology, formed from a
partnership of Struktol Company of America and the University of
Akron, has started production of Nanosan®,
a nanostructured nonwoven. SNS combines Struktol’s experience
with additives and the polymer expertise of the University of Akron
to develop a unique niche in nanofiber production.
What differentiates Nanosan® from other nanononwovens is the
incorporation of particles into the nanofiber matrix. Using proprietary
technology, various types of particles, or additives, can be either
entrapped in the nanofiber matrix or encapsulated within the nanofibers. By
varying the type of polymer nanofiber, as well as the additive,
virtually any characteristic imaginable can be achieved.
According to Dr. Laura Frazier of SNS, “Nanosan® nonwovens
are suitable for many diverse applications. For instance, SAPs
can be incorporated into the web of polymer nanofibers resulting
in a structured hydrogel, which is capable of absorbing copious
amounts of liquid while retaining its strength and elasticity.
The other notable benefit is that Nanosan® can be produced
in larger quantities at a substantially lower cost than conventional
nanofibers, making it the first commercially viable material of
its kind on the market.”
Possible applications of Nanosan® include the cable industry,
cosmetics, filtration, medical, military and personal care products,
among others. Custom Toll Manufacturing, where specialized matrices
can be produced to customer specifications, is offered in addition
to New Product Development and R&D services.
